Patricia M. d’Unienville is the holder of a BSc. (Hons) in microbiology and biochemistry from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. During her postgraduate degree, she worked with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research on developing a method to cause mutation(s) in an industrial microorganism (Clostridium acetobutilicum) to increase the production of ethanol. She also worked on a project on Teysack’s disease with a group of researchers at Groote Schurr Hospital in South Africa. Teysack’s disease is a genetically transmitted disease-causing muscular dystrophy. She created a database of all potential food spoilage microorganisms and developed a rapid method for identifying these microorganisms using the protein sequencing method.
She worked at Biodia Co. Ltd for 22 years, a Mauritian non-human primate breeding facility responsible for producing non-human primates for biomedical research. She developed a team that created a strategy supporting two expansions which made the company become one of the largest biomedical research breeding operations. She
also worked for PreLabs LLC, a US CRO based in Chicago, whose main activities are to provide discovery, preclinical, and GLP studies in various research models. Currently, she works as an R&D Consultant with the Mauritius Chemical and Fertilizer Industry. Her primary responsibilities include identifying and developing
projects that align with the company’s strategic plans, which focus on gradually replacing its chemical products with organic, biodegradable, or more eco-friendly alternatives. Patricia has expanded her offerings by creating a team of strategic partners with competencies in diverse fields.
